Tunbridge Wells Racquet Club

Located on the site of the Tunbridge Wells Swimming Pool, a new sports centre was constructed for Tunbridge Wells Borough Council principally for use as a racquet sports facility. The centre comprised of two sports halls separated by a central core for amenities, changing facilities and a first floor sports area.

The larger of the two halls was to be primarily used for tennis and was designed to meet Lawn Tennis Association requirements enabling the centre to stage official Lawn Tennis Association events.  A 37 metre span arched lattice truss was utilised to obtain the necessary vertical space without excessive height at the centre of the building.

A weight training area was required on the first floor in the central core area.  A composite floor solution was adopted, the relatively shallow construction maximising headroom at ground floor level and providing ample space for the high concentration of services and air handling equipment required in this area.  To expand the facilities available to users of the centre a covered link bridge was built over the circulatory road through the site connecting the racquet centre and the swimming pool.
