Halstead Swimming Pool, Halstead, Essex
Located in the grounds of Ramsey School, this project involved the construction of a 25 metre pool, a learner pool, fitness suite and associated amenities, together with parking. The new facility was built next to an existing sports hall and the two buildings were linked and integrated. In addition new tennis courts were constructed and an existing all-weather football and hockey pitch refurbished.
The pool structures were designed in water retaining reinforced concrete, the superstructure was a steel frame with masonry cladding and curtain walling. Great care was taken in the design and detailing to ensure an economical and elegant structure. A paint system was chosen to give a 20-year design life. Due to the confined nature of the development, plant rooms were suspended on mezzanine structures.
The disposal of foul and surface water involved negotiation with the Local Water Authority. Existing drainage systems meant that discharge restrictions were placed on the foul and surface water, resulting in on-site storage within the pipe network being adopted.
