Homerton College, Cambridge

Peter Dann were the Engineers representing Homerton College for the construction of two accommodation buildings with associated services and provided the structural design for refurbishing and extending parts of the existing college buildings.

The Harrison building for key worker accommodation is a four storey structure with 60 accommodation units with penthouse flats. The building was of traditional load bearing masonry construction with precast concrete floors and trench fill foundations. The second building consisting of 138 student accommodation units is four storeys high and was built using a precast concrete wall and floor system with masonry and timber cladding panels. This method of construction was quicker compared to load bearing masonry for the cellular nature of the building. Foul drainage has to be pumped into the public sewer and surface water was attenuated before release into the public system.

The refurbishment works included extending the student bar areas, removing walls, adding a lift and building the Ibberson building, a new two storey lecture theatre attached to and in the style of existing buildings within the conservation area.
